Get qualified, build confidence and develop the lifesaving skills you need to coach safely in the surf.
The National Surf Coach Lifesaving Award (NSCLA) is an essential qualification for anyone looking to become a surf coach in the UK. Developed with support from Surfing England and the RNLI, the course gives you the practical skills, knowledge and confidence to manage groups and respond effectively to emergencies in a surf environment.
Whether you're starting your journey as a surf coach or renewing your existing qualification, the NSCLA provides hands-on training in surf rescue, beach safety, first aid, life support, group supervision and water-based rescue skills.
Over a minimum of 20 hours of training, you'll develop skills across three key areas:
Beach environments, hazards, group management and supervision
Rescue skills in surf environments
First Aid and Life Support
Pool and open-water rescue skills
Responding confidently and effectively in an emergency
At the end of the course, you'll complete a practical and theory assessment covering group supervision, First Aid, Life Support, ocean skills and pool skills.
You must be 16 or over at the time of assessment, have a good level of fitness and be confident swimming in the sea.
Before attending, you should be able to swim at least 200 metres continuously in a pool. For the final assessment, you'll need to complete 300 metres in 8 minutes or less using a continuous front-facing stroke.
You must also be comfortable surface diving to a depth of 1.5 metres.
Once successfully completed, your NSCLA certificate is valid for two years, allowing you to progress with your surf coaching qualifications and demonstrate the lifesaving competence required to work safely in the surf environment.
Already hold a current NPLQ, First Aid at Work or NVBLQ qualification? You may be eligible for Approved Prior Learning (APL), reducing the training time required. Up to 12 hours of prior learning may be recognised.
